Abstract: In this chapter, we revise fundamental concepts of surface chemistry and their link to the rational design of composite materials. While much has been achieved regarding functional materials, there is still a lot to learn on how the surface composition of nanomaterials dictates the performance and activity for nanoparticles. Together with revising some fundamental concepts brought from classical physical chemistry and binding mechanisms; we also discuss the next frontiers in nanochemistry for allowing production of superior functional materials.
